As home to over 15 million ha of peatlands, Indonesia boasts a wide variety of peat ecosystems, including the coastal peatlands of the major islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan and Papua, upland peatlands in Papua, as well as peatlands in the basins of the large Mahakam and Kapuas rivers of East and West Kalimantan respectively. In fact, these basin peatlands are comparable to those in the basin of the mighty Congo River.
