Jakarta, 17 February 2023 — Today, Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar and the President/CEO of the World Resources Institute (WRI) Ani Dasgupta signed an MOU to establish a technical partnership in support of Indonesia's Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030.
The signing ceremony for this milestone MOU was held at the Manggala Wanabakti building in Jakarta.
“Indonesia's FOLU Net Sink 2030 is an important part of Indonesia's efforts to achieve its climate goals under the Paris Agreement. With nearly 60% contribution to reducing Indonesia's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, it plays a significant role in fulfilling Indonesia's obligations toward its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC),” Minister Nurbaya explained (17/02/2023).
“The FOLU Net Sink 2030 also contributes to global efforts to combat the climate crisis,” the Minister added.
Minister Nurbaya emphasized the importance of the technical partnership with WRI, stating that it will play a substantial role in supporting global efforts, especially in enhancing the contribution of tropical forests to reducing GHG emissions.
The main objective of the partnership is to collaborate in support of Indonesia's FOLU Net Sink 2030 Operational Plan toward achieving Indonesia's NDC.
A second objective is to elaborate techniques and methods for land inventories through interpretation of satellite images and fieldwork.
The partnership will involve technical dialogue on FOLU monitoring systems; exchange of knowledge and experience to strengthen the technical alignment of FOLU monitoring systems; and collaboration in international fora on issues of mutual interest.
Mr. Dasgupta described Indonesia's a target to achieve a Forestry and Land Use Net Carbon Sink by 2030 as “ambitious and groundbreaking” and noted that the country “has already made excellent progress toward this target by significantly reducing the rate of forest loss in recent years."
Mr Dasgupta also expressed his enthusiasm about the newly-formed technical collaboration, “I am excited about our technical collaboration that begins today under the leadership of Minister Nurbaya. We hope to synergize our joint technical efforts to show how Indonesia is progressing toward its globally important climate targets,” said Mr Dasgupta.
Minister Nurbaya, meanwhile, asserted that the technical partnership between MoEF and WRI represents a major step forward and said that both parties have achieved technical alignment at an early stage.
“We are steadfastly committed to prolonging this technical alignment in the longer term to further reinforce our methodologies and technologies in the FOLU sector,” the Minister said in conclusion.(*)
